PivotPoint: Cris Kobryn - Founder & CTO

TL;DR Short Bio

Cris Kobryn is the Founder and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of PivotPoint Technology Corp. (PivotPoint), a remote-first Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB) he founded in 2003 to leverage advanced technologies. His recent work includes designing and developing the MBSEmaestro.AI™ product line of MBSE + AI Tools & Services, which semi-automate the application of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) expertise to a wide range of Systems Engineering work tasks.

An American software engineer, systems engineer, and entrepreneur, Cris is known for leading international teams that specified the Unified Modeling Language (UML) v1 and v2 and SysML v1 standards. His work brings together MBSE, Modeling & Simulation (ModSim), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Digital Twin technologies to deliver
MBSE + ModSim + AI ⇒ Digital Twin℠ solutions—helping PivotPoint’s distinguished international clientele solve wicked problems in science, engineering, and business.

Longer Bio

Cris Kobryn founded PivotPoint Technology Corp. (PivotPoint) in 2003 and serves as its Chief Technology Officer (CTO). A remote-first Veteran Owned Small Business (VOSB), PivotPoint delivers MBSE + ModSim + AI ⇒ Digital Twin℠ solutions that integrate Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Modeling & Simulation (ModSim), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Digital Twin technologies. For over two decades, the company has leveraged these integrated technologies to solve wicked problems in science, engineering, and business for its distinguished international clientele.

Recent Work: MBSEmaestro.AI™ and MBSE + AI
Cris’s recent work includes the design and development of the MBSEmaestro.AI™ product line of MBSE + AI Tools & Services, which semi-automate the application of MBSE and Systems Modeling Language (SysML) expertise to a wide range of Systems Engineering work tasks. These span requirements definition and traceability, system analysis and design, architecture modeling, trade studies, test development and Verification & Validation (V&V), behavioral and mathematical ModSim, and software code generation.
The line includes
MBSEmaestro AI Architecture-as-a-Service™ and MBSEmaestro AI Toolkit™. Its Hybrid AI System Architecture™ combines generative AI, knowledge-based expert systems, and MBSE + SysML patterns and rules through the AI Knowledge Orchestrator™ (AIKO™). It produces System Architecture Model work products in XLS/CSV formats for manual import and further refinement in SysML ModSim tools such as Cameo Systems Modeler™ and Sparx Enterprise Architect™.

UML, SysML, and Model-Based Engineering Leadership
Cris chaired international teams of vendors and users that specified the UML 1.x and 2.0 standards for Model-Driven Development and the SysML 1.0 standard for MBSE. His expertise spans architectural modeling languages—including UML, SysML, AgileML, CyberML, and ArchiMate—and enterprise architecture frameworks such as DoDAF, UPDM, UAF, and TOGAF.
His contributions earned the
Object Management Group (OMG) Distinguished Service Award in 2000 and the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) Outstanding Service Award in 2006. In 2007, he accepted the SD Times 100 Modeling award on behalf of the SysML Partners open-source specification project he chaired.

AgileML™, CyberML™, and Distributed Systems
Cris designed AgileML™ (Agile Modeling Language™) and CyberML™ (Cyber Modeling Language™) as UML/SysML profiles and model libraries. AgileML provides recursive patterns for system analysis, design, and architecture in Agile MBSE applications. CyberML extends these with network-design and cybersecurity patterns for fault-tolerant, cybersecure distributed systems, including network nodes, protocols, connections, topologies, security devices, and strong encryption techniques.
CyberML can be customized to support cybersecurity frameworks and standards, including the
NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF) 2.0 (NIST CSWP 29), the DoD Risk Management Framework (RMF), and the ISO/IEC 27000 family. Cris’s distributed-systems experience dates to the early 1980s and the ARPANET era, underpinning his rigorous, ModSim-centered approach to Model-Based Digital Engineering.

AI Foundations
Cris began his software engineering career in the early 1980s, applying Prolog, Lisp, and CLOS to knowledge-based expert systems and natural language processing in commercial and defense settings. In the early 1990s, he led Harlequin Limited’s applications group in developing KnowledgeWorks™, a LispWorks-based expert-system toolkit supporting rule-based and logic programming, Prolog, and SQL database access. The team also developed Watson™, a KnowledgeWorks adaptation for police investigative analysis that was later acquired by Xanalys Limited.

Professional Experience, Military Service, and Education
Before founding PivotPoint, Cris held senior technical positions with Telelogic, EDS, MCI Systemhouse, Inference, Harlequin, and SAIC. Before entering software and systems engineering, he served as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and U.S. Army, with infantry, armor, airborne, and Special Forces qualifications.
Cris earned a BA from Colgate University and a BSCS from San Diego State University (SDSU). His interdisciplinary graduate studies at SDSU and UCLA explored connections among linguistics, computer science, and AI; at UCLA, he held a graduate fellowship. He taught AI programming languages at the University of California, San Diego Extension and is a frequent invited speaker on Model-Based Engineering, UML, and SysML. His professional memberships include ACM, IEEE, INCOSE, and AAAI.
